Campaign Snapshot

Client: City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW)

Agency: CMRignite

Campaign Platform: Slow Down MKE

Goal: Reduce speeding and shift everyday driving behavior across Milwaukee

Overview

“Speeding: We Can Live Without It” is a public safety campaign designed to reduce reckless driving and promote safer road habits throughout Milwaukee. The campaign focuses on one clear truth: speeding does not just break rules, it changes lives. Through bold messaging and real community stories, the work encouraged drivers to slow down, stay aware, and protect the people around them.

The Challenge

Speeding is one of the most dangerous and common driving behaviors, and it plays a major role in fatal crashes. Nearly 29% of traffic fatalities have been linked to speeding in recent years, making it a clear and urgent issue that impacts drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and entire neighborhoods.

The challenge was not simply awareness. The real goal was to break through denial and normalize safer behavior in a way people would actually feel, remember, and respond to.

Our Approach

We built the campaign around emotional truth and real consequences, combining disruptive outdoor creative with social first storytelling to meet audiences where they are. The creative system used impactful visuals, direct language, and community driven testimonials to make the risks of speeding impossible to ignore.

The campaign positioned slowing down as something practical, urgent, and human. It is not about fear for fear’s sake. It is about preventing loss, protecting families, and saving lives.

Key Messaging

  • The core message reinforced a simple idea:
  • Saving a few minutes is not worth a life altering crash.
  • By pairing bold statements with real victim stories and clear calls to action, the campaign made speeding feel personal, not abstract.

Deliverables

The campaign launched with a complete multi channel system designed for strong visibility, high repetition, and behavior change:

  • Hero testimonial videos (2)

  • Social media posts and cutdowns

  • Influencer led content to expand reach and relatability

  • Web banners and digital placements

  • Outdoor advertising and environmental graphics (bus wrap, billboards, bike panels, and street level signage)

Hero Stories (Testimonials)

To bring real human impact into the campaign, the storytelling centered on two powerful perspectives:

  • A sister sharing the loss of a loved one killed by speeding

  • A woman sharing her experience after being hit due to speeding

These stories grounded the campaign in real life consequences and created emotional connection that supported long term behavior change.

Safety Education Focus

To support awareness with action, the campaign encouraged practical safe driving behaviors:

Know your speed and adjust for traffic, weather, and road conditions
Give space and avoid tailgating
Respect posted speed limits, especially in high pedestrian areas and work zones
Allow extra time so drivers are not rushing

Impact

The campaign launched as a citywide, highly visible effort across transit, outdoor, digital, and social channels, bringing the message directly into Milwaukee neighborhoods and daily commutes. By pairing large scale public installations with real life testimonials and social first storytelling, the work sparked citywide conversation around speeding and safe driving.

The initiative supported Milwaukee’s broader traffic safety goals by increasing awareness of the real consequences of reckless driving and reinforcing safer habits such as obeying posted limits, giving space to other drivers, and slowing down in high pedestrian areas.

Through sustained public presence and emotionally grounded storytelling, the campaign positioned slowing down not as an inconvenience, but as a shared responsibility to protect Milwaukee families and communities.
